This ranking was released jointly by Professor John P.A. Ioannidis’s team at Stanford University and the internationally renowned academic publisher Elsevier. It is based on a comprehensive set of metrics—including the number of citations, h-index (a measure used to assess the quantity and quality of a researcher’s academic output), , the co-author-adjusted hm-index, and the number of citations for papers where the scientist is the sole or first author. It reflects scientists’ output and academic influence, featuring the top 2% of scientists globally across 20 disciplinary fields and 174 sub-disciplines.

In the list released, 18,361 scholars from China were included in the “Lifetime Scientific Impact List,” and 41,052 scholars were selected for the “Annual Scientific Impact List.” A total of 98 scholars from Chang'an university are included in the 2026 list of the world’s top 2% scientists, an increase of 21 compared to the previous year.
