Introduction

The School of Automobile is a key school at Chang'an University, integral to the nation's Project 211 and the 985 Project Innovative Platform for Advantageous Disciplines. Its origins trace back to select programs at the former Xi'an Automobile Machinery School, and it has since evolved through several stages: the Department of Automobile Engineering at Xi'an Highway Institute, the School of Automobile Engineering at Xi'an Highway Jiaotong University, and finally, the School of Automobile at Chang'an University.

The School has achieved a series of significant research accomplishments in the fundamental and engineering technologies of highway transportation and commercial vehicles. Today, it stands as a premier national base for cultivating high-level scientific, technological, and managerial talent in the automotive transport sector. Its alumni are found throughout the industry and have become the backbone of China's transportation industry and national automobile industry.

The School offers four undergraduate programs and operates three undergraduate teaching laboratories. It is also home to a National Teaching Demonstration Center, a National Virtual Simulation Experimentation Center, a Key Laboratory designated by the Ministry of Transport, and a Shaanxi Provincial Key Laboratory. The School currently has 126 faculty and staff members, among whom are 25 recipients of national, provincial, or ministerial-level talent awards and expert recognitions. This includes 24 professors, 29 associate professors, and 11 senior engineers. The total student enrollment is 1738, comprising 1167 undergraduates, 481 master's students, and 90 doctoral candidates.

The School hosts one national key discipline in Transportation Engineering and two postdoctoral research stations in Transportation Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. It offers doctoral (Ph.D.) programs in two second-level disciplines: Vehicle Operation Engineering and Vehicle Engineering. At the master's level, it offers a program in the first-level discipline of Transportation Engineering, a program in the second-level discipline of Vehicle Engineering, and three professional master's degree programs.

Currently, the School's teaching accolades include one national-level and three provincial-level teaching teams; two national-level and three provincial-level Signature Programs; two national-level and three provincial-level First-Class Programs; six National Elite Courses/ Golden Courses; and ten Provincial-level Elite/Resource-Sharing Courses.

The School's laboratories cover a building area of 10,000 square meters, with an original equipment value exceeding 107 million RMB. It is equipped with a range of advanced, large-scale instruments and facilities, including a Human-Vehicle-Environment 3D Dynamic Simulation System, Electric Vehicle Test and Research System, Comprehensive Vehicle Performance Testing System, Vehicle Driving Performance Comprehensive Test System, Commercial Vehicle Operational Safety Test Platform, Commercial Vehicle Rollover Test Platform, Mobile Vehicle Environmental Monitoring Platform, Internal Combustion Engine Spray and Combustion Analysis Platform, Clean Fuel Physical Property Test System, and a Virtual Simulation Platform for Road Traffic Accident Analysis and Reconstruction. The School also operates the only comprehensive automotive proving ground at a Chinese university, which is a proposed National Engineering Center.

The School holds key leadership positions in numerous national academic and industry organizations. It serves as an executive director of the China Society of Automotive Engineers and holds director-level positions in the China Internal Combustion Engine Society, China Transportation Energy Research Society, China Highway and Transportation Society's Automobile Transportation Chapter, and the Traffic Ergonomics Branch of the China Ergonomics Society. It also serves as the vice-chair institution of the China Bus Association, the vice-chair of the National Steering Committee for Automotive Service Engineering Education, and the chair of the Road Transportation Subcommittee of the National Steering Committee for Transportation Engineering Education. Furthermore, it houses the Test and Inspection Center for the National Committee on Alcohol Ether Fuels and Clean Automobiles and is the authorized Automobile Product Quality Supervision & Inspection Station and Comprehensive Vehicle Performance Test Station for both the Shaanxi Province and Xi'an Municipal Bureaus of Quality and Technical Supervision. It is also the authorized Motor Vehicle Forensic Appraisal Center for the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Justice.

The School actively engages in collaboration and academic exchange with universities and research institutions worldwide. It maintains close partnerships with universities and research institutes such as the University of Birmingham (UK), National University of Singapore, Braunschweig University of Technology (Germany), Michigan Technological University (USA), Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (USA), Cornell University (USA), University of California, Davis (USA), Old Dominion University (USA), University College Dublin (Ireland), Coventry University (UK), The University of Tokyo (Japan), Kobe University (Japan), Moscow Automobile and Road Construction State Technical University (Russia), and the Japan Automobile Research Institute.

Through its long history of educational practice, the School has cultivated a spirit of self-improvement, truth-seeking and pragmatism, unity and progress, and the pursuit of excellence, earning an outstanding public reputation.

In this new historical era, aligning with the major national strategies of building a transportation power, a manufacturing power, and a Digital China, the School targets the frontiers of automotive and transportation science and technology. Building upon a seventy-year educational legacy, it is committed to fostering innovative and versatile talent, conducting high-level scientific research, providing high-quality social services, and engaging in high-impact international collaboration.
