leveraging its profound geoscience background and disciplinary accumulation, has long been committed to talent cultivation, scientific research, and social services in land-related majors. It has gradually developed a distinctive talent training model and a professional disciplinary system, having cultivated over 3,000 professionals in relevant fields for the country.
In September 2015, with the approval of the Ministry of Natural Resources (formerly the Ministry of Land and Resources) and the People's Government of Shaanxi Province, Chang'an University and Shaanxi Provincial Land Engineering Construction Group jointly established the first School of Land Engineering in China. In September 2019, in response to the practical needs of national strategies, industrial development, and higher education reform, the School of Land Engineering was established as a secondary college of the university. It has piloted comprehensive reforms in industry-education integration and interdisciplinary discipline development, focusing on comprehensive interdisciplinarity, strengthening the foundation of geography, highlighting land-specific practices, and exploring an innovative development path that integrates geoscience and technology with land engineering and management. Currently, Chang'an University is the only university in China that offers a complete education system covering undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs in the land engineering discipline, and has taken a leading position in the cultivation of the land engineering discipline and talent development.
The school consists of 3 departments and 4 centers, offering 3 undergraduate programs, namely Geographic Information Science, Land Consolidation Engineering, and Land Resources Management. Among them, the Geographic Information Science program was selected as a National First-class Undergraduate Program Construction Site in 2021, and the Land Consolidation Engineering program was listed as an A+ program in Chinese Universities by the Soft Science Ranking in 2024. It also has 4 master's degree authorization programs, including Geography, Land Engineering, Land Resources Management, and Agricultural Engineering and Information Technology (professional type), as well as 1 doctoral degree authorization program in Land Engineering. Thus, a comprehensive talent training system covering undergraduate - master's - doctoral levels has been formed.
The school currently has 84 faculty members (including off-campus part-time graduate supervisors), among whom there are 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, 4 national-level talents, 2 recipients of the Special Government Allowance of the State Council, 1 winner of the Shaanxi Provincial Teaching Master Award, 1 talent selected into the Young and Middle-aged Leading Scientists in Technological Innovation under the Shaanxi Provincial Talent Climbing Project, 3 talents in the Shaanxi Provincial Youth Support Program, 1 talent in the Xi'an Municipal Youth Support Program, 3 university-level Model Teachers of Ethics, and 6 university-level Excellent Teachers. The faculty structure is reasonable, including 40 full professors, 20 associate professors, 20 doctoral supervisors, and 45 master's supervisors.
Since its establishment, the school has successively undertaken more than 50 projects, including research topics of the National Key R&D Program, key projects, general projects, and youth projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as key scientific and technological innovation team programs at the provincial and ministerial levels. It has also undertaken over 200 projects of various levels, such as comprehensive land consolidation in the whole region, ecological restoration, territorial spatial planning, and R&D of information software in the geoscience field. The school has won 1 Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 National Teaching Achievement Awards, and 10 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards.
At present, the school has built 7 scientific and technological innovation platforms, including the Key Laboratory of Degraded and Unused Land Consolidation Engineering of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Shaanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Land Consolidation, the Shaanxi Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Land Consolidation, and the Chang'an University Cooperation Office of the State Key Laboratory of Geographic Information Engineering. In addition, it has 5 field scientific experiment observation stations (such as the Xiaojihan Station in Yulin) and 6 teaching and scientific research practice bases (including the Chanba Core Experimental Base for Soil Organic Reconstruction).
The school has carried out exchange and cooperation with institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of California, Davis, and the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Since 2005, it has jointly trained 4 doctoral students and more than 70 master's students with the University of Twente (the Netherlands) and the University of Gävle (Sweden). Since 2016, it has successfully co-hosted four sessions of the Global Innovation (Xi'an) Forum with the MIT Global Industry Alliance. In 2017, it jointly established the China-US Research Center for Land Ecological Engineering Technology with the University of California, Davis.
Forging ahead with great aspirations. The school will face the world, serve the country, be based in the western region, and lead the industry. With fostering virtue through education as its fundamental mission and striving for first-class status as its goal, it aims to achieve new accomplishments in cultivating top-notch innovative talents, improving the quality of graduate education, building a high-level faculty, conducting high-quality scientific research, developing high-end scientific research platforms, establishing emerging interdisciplinary disciplines, and promoting international cooperation and exchanges.
