Introduction

The School of Science at Chang’an University currently comprises seven teaching departments: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science, Statistics, Engineering Mechanics, Applied Physics, Engineering Graphics, and Chemistry and Materials Science.

It also includes three teaching development centers (for Mathematics, Mechanics, and Physics), three research centers (in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Statistics and Data Science), and one Institute of Data Technology. As a co-construction unit of the Virtual Teaching and Research Section for University Mathematics Curriculum Groups under the Ministry of Education, the school has established the Xi’an Key Laboratory of Digital Detection Technology for Structural Damage and participates in the co-construction of the Shaanxi Branch of the National Center for Applied Mathematics. It operates four experimental teaching centers (of Mechanics, Physics, Chemistry, and Scientific and Engineering Computing) and undertakes the responsibility of teaching fundamental courses and supporting academic program development across the university. Relying on the Mathematical Modeling and Innovation Practice Center, the school trains, guides, and selects students to participate in the National College Student Mathematical Contest in Modeling, the American College Student Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM), and the National Graduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling.

The school has 180 faculty and staff, including 83 professors, associate professors, senior engineers, and senior lab technicians. Among them, there are 7 doctoral supervisors and 40 master’s supervisors. The faculty team boasts one member of the National Science and Technology Awards Committee, one member of the Ministry of Education's Higher Education Teaching Guidance Committee, one recipient of the Shaanxi Provincial Distinguished Young Scientists Fund, one Shaanxi Science and Technology Rising Star, one young top-notch talent under the Shaanxi Sanqin Talent Special Support Program, one member of the Mathematics and Physics Working Committee of the Higher Education Teaching Guidance Committee, one Provincial Teaching Master, one Model Teacher of Ethics, one Advanced Individual in Teacher Ethics, five young talents supported by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) Youth Talent Promotion Program, one Outstanding Counselor, one Top Ten Counselor, six university-level Teaching Masters, six university-level Model Teachers of Ethics, and 14 teachers recognized as “Most Satisfactory Teachers” in undergraduate teaching. The school is home to two Shaanxi Provincial Course Ideology and Politics Demonstration Teaching Teams; its Engineering Mechanics Teaching Team has been named a Shaanxi Provincial Teaching Team, and the former Department of Mathematics and Information Science was awarded the title of Shaanxi Provincial Advanced Collective in Teacher Ethics Construction.

Committed to enhancing teaching capacity through its Faculty Teaching Ability Improvement Plan, the school adheres to the philosophy of promoting teaching through competition and integrating competition with teaching. It hones the teaching team via various teaching competitions, which has not only improved overall teaching standards and fostered the development of teaching teams but also yielded remarkable results. Over the past five years, faculty members have won more than 50 awards in teaching competitions at all levels, with Professor Zhang Meng securing the first prize in the 5th National University Teachers’ Teaching Innovation Competition.

The school consistently emphasizes research on teaching reform. In the past five years, it has undertaken over 20 teaching reform projects at or above the university level, been approved to develop seven provincial-level first-class courses and two course ideology and politics demonstration courses, and led the efforts to win one first prize and receive two second prizes in the Shaanxi Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards.

The school’s laboratories cover a total area of over 8,100 square meters, with equipment valued at more than 22 million yuan (RMB). The Mechanics and Chemistry Experimental Teaching Centers (co-constructed with the School of Water and Environment) have been recognized as Shaanxi Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, while the Physics Experimental Teaching Center is designated as a university-level experimental teaching demonstration center. Beyond undertaking extensive experimental teaching tasks, these centers provide scientific and technological services aligned with the university’s key disciplines (e.g., road and bridge engineering), and their affiliated research projects have won awards including the Third Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress of the Ministry of Transport.

Over the past three years, faculty members have led more than 90 vertical research projects and over 50 horizontal projects, with an average annual research funding of nearly 5 million yuan (RMB). They have published over 260 academic papers in prominent domestic and international journals, including more than 170 SCI-indexed papers and over 10 highly cited papers in ESI (Essential Science Indicators). Their research achievements have been honored with one Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, one First Prize of the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education, one Second Prize and one Third Prize of the Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Award, one Provincial Youth Science and Technology Award, and two Second Prizes of the Science and Technology Achievement Award of Higher Education Institutions (Ministry of Education).

The school offers four undergraduate programs: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science, Engineering Mechanics, and Applied Physics. It confers master’s degrees in Mathematics and Mechanics, and a doctoral degree in the secondary discipline of Computational Structural Mechanics. The Mathematics and Applied Mathematics program was approved as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Site in 2020; the Engineering Mechanics program and the Information and Computing Science program were approved as Shaanxi Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Sites in 2020 and 2022, respectively.

In recent years, the school’s programs and disciplines have focused on the university’s key fields, actively serving the three major industries of transportation, land resources, and urban and rural construction. The school and its faculty are committed to solving industry-related problems using mathematical and mechanical theories and methods. With the structures of programs and disciplinary teams continuously optimized, academic standards have steadily improved, and breakthroughs have been achieved in multiple areas—including teaching competitions, teaching achievement awards, ESI highly cited papers, General Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), research awards, provincial- and ministerial-level talents, and program construction. Meanwhile, the school provides solid support for the sustainable development and Double First-Class construction of the university’s key disciplines, such as Transportation Engineering, Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology, Computer Science and Technology, and Management Science and Engineering.
