Introduction

The School of Materials Science and Engineering at Chang’an University was formed through the merger of the Road Materials Teaching and Research Section of the former School of Highway, the Materials Department of the School of Construction Machinery, and the Materials Science and Engineering Department of the School of Resources. It is a college characterized by materials engineering, combining science and engineering.

Since 1956, it has been engaged in talent cultivation in the fields of road construction materials and hot working processes. In 1996, it was approved for a master’s degree program in the secondary discipline of Materials Science, followed by a first-level master’s degree program in Materials Science and Engineering in 2006, and a professional master’s degree program in Materials and Chemical Engineering in 2017. The college has also established a first-level doctoral degree program in Materials Science and Engineering. The ESI ranking of its materials discipline has entered the top 3‰ globally. Leveraging the strengths of related disciplines such as Transportation Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Geo-Mineral Resources, the college conducts teaching and research in Materials Science and Engineering. It is a teaching and research-oriented college with outstanding advantages and distinctive features in the field of transportation engineering materials, as well as strong capabilities in areas such as organic-inorganic composite functional materials, long-life road engineering materials for special regions, and the theory and technology of light alloy surface strengthening.

The college offers five undergraduate majors: Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Forming and Control Engineering, Inorganic Non-metallic Materials Engineering, New Energy Materials and Devices, and Polymer Materials and Engineering. Among these, the Materials Forming and Control Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering majors have been selected as national first-class undergraduate programs, while the Inorganic Non-metallic Materials Engineering and Polymer Materials and Engineering majors have been chosen as Shaanxi Province first-class undergraduate programs. The New Energy Materials and Devices major has been included in the New Engineering Practice Project. Four of these majors have passed the national engineering education professional accreditation.

The college currently has 28 professors and 51 associate professors, including 30 doctoral supervisors. Over 60% of its full-time faculty members have international academic backgrounds. A high-level faculty team has been gradually established, guided by experienced professors and led by young teachers. This team currently includes 4 national-level leading talents, 5 national-level young talents, and 13 provincial/ministerial-level talents. It comprises 1 innovation team in key areas under the Ministry of Transport, 1 key science and technology innovation team under the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Science and Technology, 4 young innovation teams at Shaanxi universities, and 11 graduate joint training bases, including the Shaanxi Provincial Graduate Joint Training Demonstration Workstation.
