The school began in 1952. It is mainly engaged in the training of advanced professional and technical personnel and scientific research in the  field  of  construction machinery design, manufacturing, and control, highway mechanized construction, highway maintenance, and management. It is one of the characteristic schools of Chang’an University and a renowned construction machinery school in China.

The school has a first-level discipline doctoral program of “Mechanical Engineering”, four second-level discipline doctorate and academic master’s degrees including Mechanical Manufacturing and its Automation, Mechanical Design and Theory, Mechatronics Engineering, Construction Machinery, and a professional master’s-degree graduate program of Mechanical Engineering. The first- level discipline postdoctoral research station of “Mechanical Engineering” affiliated to the school involves one first-level discipline (Construction Machinery) and four second-level disciplines (Mechanical Manufacturing and its Automation, Mechanical Design and Theory, Mechatronics Engineering, Automotive Engineering), which are the key disciplines both of the national “Project 211” and Ministry of Communications.

There are four undergraduate majors: Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Design and Manufacturing, and its Automation, and Industrial Design, which covers six professional fields of mechanical manufacturing and its automation, intelligent manufacturing engineering, mechatronics engineering, construction machinery, transportation construction, and intelligent equipment, and industrial design. Besides, there is also a class for foreign students majoring in Mechanical Design and Manufacturing and its Automation. Among them, Mechanical Design and Manufacturing and its Automation is the national first-class undergraduate specialty; Mechanical Design and Manufacturing and its Automation, and Mechatronics Engineering are the national characteristic specialties. There are 2025 undergraduate students, 741 master and doctoral students, and 36 international students. In recent years, the employment rate of graduates has stabilized at over 95% on average, the enrollment rate of students in graduate school has exceeded 30%, and the rate of overseas postgraduates for undergraduates has exceeded 5%.

In recent years, the school has undertaken more than 300 scientific research projects, including the National Key Research and Development Plan, the National Science and Technology Support Plan, the National Natural Science Fund, the National Defense and Military Industrial Projects, Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Projects, and Enterprise High-tech Projects. It has won 3 second-class awards for National Science and Technology Progress, and over 30 Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Progress awards. It has undertaken more than 100 educational and teaching  research  projects,  including  national planning projects, and has won more than 20 provincial teaching achievement awards, with an annual research funding of more than  20 million RMB.

The school has National Engineering Laboratory for “Highway Maintenance Equipment”, National Virtual Simulation Experimental and Teaching Center of Construction Machinery, Key Laboratory of “Road Construction Technology and Equipment”  of Ministry of Education, Engineering Research Center of “Highway Construction Equipment and Technology” of Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of “Highway Construction Machinery” of Shaanxi Province, “Mechanical Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center” of Shaanxi Province and Xi'an Testing Center for Road Construction Machinery of Ministry of Communications. The total value of teaching and scientific research facilities in the school is worth more than 40 million RMB, and the laboratory construction area is 12,375 square meters.

The school has a total of 185 faculty members and staff, including 16 doctoral supervisors, 89 graduate supervisors, 22 professors, 89 professors/associate professors, and 116 holding a doctorate, of which 5 are holding an overseas doctorate. Among the 137 full-time faculty members, 3 are entitled to the special government allowance of the State Council, 4 are on-campus double- shouldered teachers, 3 are teaching masters at the provincial level, 7 are teaching masters at the school level, and 4 are the most satisfied teachers of Chang’an University. There are 3 outstanding teaching teams of Shaanxi Province, 5 school-level outstanding teaching teams. There are also 51 off-campus postgraduate instructors with full-time professional degrees and 7 affiliated professors. The average age of the faculty and staff is 42 years old, and 65% of the faculty members and staff are under 45 years old. The extent of professionalism, youth, and internationalization has been enhanced, forming a high-quality team with young and middle-aged faculty as the main.

The school actively promotes the process of school-enterprise cooperation and the development of education funds. It has successively established the Sun Zuwang Fund and the Feng Zhongxu Education Fund. More than ten large construction machinery enterprises across the country have successively set up scholarships in the school. The strategic alliance of industry- university-research has been established with multiple enterprises. In the last five years, the school has received a total of more than 5 million RMB in grants.

With the rich accumulation in 69 years and adhering to the University motto of “Preservation and Virtue, Diligent and Innovation”, the school has sent more than 10,000 high-level professional and technical personnel to the country, and cultivated a number of well-known experts and respected scholars.Looking back on the extraordinary years, China’s construction machinery industry has experienced a period of arduous and tortuous start, catch-up and acceleration. It has entered the world-leading transcendence era and has become the world's largest construction machinery production and sales country, providing a broader space for the future development of the school. In the new historical stage, the school will carry on the past to adhere to the path of characteristics development, connotative development and harmonious development, continuously improve the level of teaching, scientific research and internationalization, and advance towards the direction of distinctive features, prominent advantages and international reputation.
